The workshop was advertised (take a look at it here),applications sent and shortlisted candidates were invited for the 2-day workshop.
The workshop took place in the heart of Yaba, Lagos state (Yaba is fast becoming the hub for programmers- recall that Mark Zuckerberg's first port of call when he visited Nigeria a few days ago was Yaba).
The event started on 9th of September with an "Installation Party" where attendees (I was also an attendee) were matched with mentors/coaches for the workshop and the necessary applications were installed on the laptops of attendees. The attendees were introduced to the objectives of the programme and the course content. There was also plenty of snacks and drinks to relish throughout the day.
Day 2 of the workshop- 10th of September turned out to be a rainy day but the rain could not stop the ladies from turning up for the workshop. Armed with their laptops and umbrellas, the ladies defied the rain and came in their numbers. The ladies were introduced to command, python(variables, list, dictionary, functions, strings, integer), Github, django, HTML and the internet using the using the Django girls tutorial. The ladies created accounts with Github and PythonAnyWhere. So basically, the ladies learnt how to create a website from scratch. There was break in between for breakfast, lunch and a photo session.
The workshop ended successfully and certificates for participation were issued to participants. There were also some souvenirs to go home with.
The event was really fun and "Django Girls" went home with the determination to make something out of what they learnt.
So, if you are a lady, I encourage you to pick up interest in programming. There are very few ladies in the programming industry in Nigeria even though the opportunities are huge.
Thumbs up to Django Girls Lagos ( Aisha Bello, Kosisochukwu Anyanwu, Obiamaka Agbanje and Tomiwa Orolu) and Andela for this wonderful initiative.
Keep Living the Ace Life!!!
