World Diabetes Day: How to Manage Diabetes

Today November 14 is World Diabetes Day. Diabetes is a clinical state when an individual cannot fully utilize sugar (glucose) in their blood. It means the blood sugar level is high. It’s a lifestyle disease. It is a disease that is common in the urban area than in the rural area.

 

Types of Diabetes

 

Type 1 Diabetes – This occurs when the pancreas cannot produce insulin. It is found in people below 30 years of age.

Type 2 Diabetes –This type of Diabetes is as a result of lack of insulin. It is found in older people. 90% of people that have Diabetes have Type 2 Diabetes.

 Gestation Diabetes is Diabetes found in an individual during pregnancy and after the pregnancy the Diabetes is gone.

What are the Causes of Type 2 Diabetes (Risk Factor)


  • Aging: Aging bring about rise in blood level and blood sugar.

  • Body Weight:  Excess body weight. Obese people are likely to have Diabetes.

  • Diet: eating refine sugar foods since they do not have insulin to crash it down.

  • Family history: People with Diabetic parents stand the chance of having Diabetes but with health lifestyle they can control it.

How to Manage Diabetes

Some patient can overcome diabetes through exercising and eating right without taking drugs, while others may require drugs. So, exercise regularly and maintain good body weight.

  • Fruits- Oranges, Apples, etc

Fruits that are not good for Diabetes patients are:

 

Pineapple and watermelon contain glucose. Diabetes patients are advice to step down on the intake of these fruits.

Complications that may arise as a result of diabetes are as follow

Kidney failure
Heart failure
Blindness
Leg amputation

Early Diagnosis is important. People should check their blood sugar regularly.
