Web 2.0 is the concept that is use for the second generation of web services and information technologies that enable the users to communicate and participate on live discussions.
The user can produces information using web 2.0 technologies such as blogging, posting, web pages, online chatting, and instant messaging.
Web 2.0 is a medium for exchanging and sharing information and knowledge. An example is the Wikipedia where information is constantly created. Also, web 2.0 can be use for social networking like the facebook site.
In Nigeria, the students need information to carry out their academic task such as assignment, projects, seminars, and presentations. Most times, they are frustrated because they cannot find information that will meet their information needs. This may as a result of their poor information retrieval skills.
Students can actually assist themselves in carrying out their academic tasks without been limited by the factor distance or location. Course works can be discussed online by students no matter his or her location. This can help students develop team skills, critical thinking skills, communication skills and also, ability to solve problems.
If all these skills can be developed by using web 2.0 technologies, the question then is – DO STUDENTS OF NIGERIAN UNIVERSITIES USE WEB 2.0 FOR ACADEMIC PURPOSE?
I strongly belive in the IT revolution, which Nigeria as a whole must be part of or else we will suffer the same effect of lack of industrialization which was a result of our neggligience of the industrial revolution. However,on this WEB 2.0, very few Nigerian University Students are users.

Human beings are social its very important that we all find areas where we channel our desire to make friends. Web 2.0 presents such an avenue in this age of industrialization and globalization. This is something we need to do ourselves.
ReplyDeletethanks for ur initiative. Web2.0 is what we need in our society to exchange ideas.
ReplyDeletetony Adibi,
ReplyDeletethe fact is that only a very minimal percentage of our youths are interested in any thing that has to do with academics. Therefore, the use of web 2.0 for academic purposes by the youth is quite low especially among the youths in developing nations . I think the situation is even worse in Nigeria because rather than use it for noble purposes, the trend is that its use is tilted more towards the wrong purposes (internet fraud & the likes)and many of our students in the universities donot give know its enormous potential and this needs to be addressed
This is a good write up,the benefits that web2.0 provide are enormous and if Nigerian students can avail themselves these opportunities, it will go a long way in improving the quality of graduates produced by Nigeria universities.

ReplyDeletei think that most students donot even know what they can achieve using this ground breaking technology. I imagine the cross-fertilization of ideas that students can avail themselves of as well as other immense positive achievements. Imagine an assignment that a student can get as many professional views on or subjects that will enrich the students academic bank account. OH! there are endless possibilities but we students are not making use of web 2.0 maximally as we ought.
well, that(use of web 2.0 for academic purpose) may be existent but only at a small rate and usually for emergency reasons such as an approaching examination or an assignment that has defied solution for quite a while. It's a good initiative though.
