School children are now
been fed at school by either the government for free or the school authority
while the parents pay for such services. In fact, one of the agenda of the
present president of the federal republic of Nigeria -President Buhari is
feeding of School children. This is already taking place in some states of the
country and the governors of these states have assured their people that they
are capable of sustaining the project since the
parents are not paying for the
food. This of course is a welcome development in ensuring that no child is
denied the essential nutrients at the developmental Stage. Also, career parents
who do not have time to prepare meals for their children to take to school are
rest assured that their kids will not be hungry while at school. Now that the government and the school authority have taken the burden of feeding off the parents, they (Parents) should not fold their arms and relax leaving everything to the government or the school authority to do. The parents should also be involved by watching out for the following:
1. Eating Utensil: The parents must know the utensil been use by these schools. Are they provided with disposable utensil or non-disposable? If, the utensils are not disposable, who does the cleaning? the feeding team or the school children. Also, how the utensil are kept matter. Proper hygiene is important to avoid outbreak of diseases such as cholera.
2. Type of food: with the present economy crisis, cutting down certain food class may be used to achieve the feeding agenda. But, if the children are not getting the necessary nutrients the aim of feeding these children is defeated. So parents so watch out for that their children are eating the necessary food that they need.
3. Storage of Food Stuff: Parents should find out how food stuffs are stored by those involved in feeding their children. Recently, there was an outbreak of Lassa fever in the country in which human got the virus from rodents through garri. Food stuff should be stored properly in order to prevent pests and rodents from destroying them. Spoiled food should be disposed. Also, the expiration date of food product should be taken into consideration. Most time, these food products are bought in bulk and those in charge do not take out time to check for the expiration date of the products they purchase.
4. Place where they eat: It is not enough to prepare nutritious meals for these school children; the place where they eat should be clean at all times. That is, before and after meal. So next time you attend the Parent Teacher Association (PTA) take time to ask questions about your child’s feeding.
The total well-being of every child is the responsibilities of the parents first and then, the government. All hands must be at work so that we will raise healthy leaders.
